Sailors, teams, race fans and stakeholders are firmly focussed on Alicante, the start port for the 15th edition of The Ocean Race, with preparations for the January race start in full swing.

Saturday’s forecast was for a moderate breeze with gusts of 30mph, great conditions for an open aspect club like Shotwick. The wind was strong in the morning accompanied by rain, two races were scheduled for the afternoon.

Club members were joined by representatives from our affiliate organisations, happily including our resident Sea Cadet unit for the first time, and visitors from near and surprisingly far.

It took patience, four postponed starting sequences and a long wait for the breeze, but Day 4 of the 2026 Melges 24 World Championship ended with a good late-afternoon race on Little Traverse Bay.

The overnight leader board is very tight, with the New Zealand teams in 3rd and 6th places and all to sail for in the remaining two days of the second Preliminary Regatta in Naples.
