New Year’s Day morning saw the dinghy and keelboat fleets afloat at Howth Yacht Club in Dublin, Ireland as the hardier sailors took the opportunity to get the 2026 racing season under way.

Three days of qualifying races are over for the ILCA 4 and ILCA 6 fleets with the sailors now assigned to either the Gold or Silver Fleets in the 2026 ILCA Oceania and Australian Open and Youth Championships under way in Hobart.

I’m a great believer in starting things on the right foot. Be that in the morning, going for a run (even though it was damn chilly this morning) to set yourself up for the day, or preparing ahead for a meeting so that you’ve got the figures to hand.

The sailing season at Largs Sailing Club got off to a bracing start with the Optimum Time New Years Race, delivering sunny but bracing winter conditions, close racing and an impressive turnout on the water.

Today’s two races were punctuated by shifty light airs that were hard to read and react to, leading to countless capsizes and one crew falling overboard, but quickly pulled back aboard by his skipper – a day when swimming was second only to sailing.

After some very windy weather over Christmas and the wrong tides over New Year, it was champagne (albeit cold champagne) conditions over the weekend for the oldest Illusion trophy in the programme – the Ice Breaker!
